ACCOUNT RESEARCH FOR PACKAGING MACHINERY AND AUTOMATION SELLERS

Make the next material change less of a line-side surprise.

Alma Hunter delivers reviewed account and buyer-fit research for packaging machinery sellers—surfacing manufacturers with material-change, line-compatibility, or avoidable-waste needs. No promised leads; just a better-informed sales conversation.

The accounts. The business case. The next move.

THE PAIN / NOT ANOTHER GENERIC LIST

The line has opinions about your new material.

Before selling time becomes sunk time, test the obstacles.

New substrate, old line assumptions

Films, recycled content, or variable board can complicate sealing, tension, and handling; equipment fit needs testing, not wishful thinking.

Changeovers can hide real costs

Material changes and changeovers can add cost, while rejects and troubleshooting make the source of waste harder to see.

Lighter packaging isn't automatically easier

Material reduction can save money, but a package still has to run reliably on the buyer’s product, format, and line.

02 / NEXTThe obstacle becomes a research question.

WHAT ALMA HUNTER DELIVERS

A better-fit conversation starts at the line.

  1. 01

    Qualify material fit

Map formats, substrates, machine constraints, and trial needs before proposing equipment or upgrades.

  2. 02

    Put waste on a baseline

Ask about scrap, rejects, rework, changeover loss, and disposal costs so buyers can evaluate a case with their own data.

  3. 03

    Make the next step testable

Frame line trials and measurable run rules around the buyer’s SKUs, operating conditions, and validation requirements.

THE KPIs / TRACK, DO NOT PROMISE

Better evidence.
Clearer sales decisions.

Metrics to monitor—not guaranteed lifts, meetings or sales.

TRACK 01

Material-fit baseline coverage

Track the share of researched accounts with documented substrate, format, and equipment constraints; a learning measure, not a campaign result.

TRACK 02

Waste-baseline coverage

Track how often buyer discussions establish a scrap, reject, or rework baseline and its measurement method.

TRACK 03

Buying-case readiness

Track whether research identifies annual line volume, relevant cost inputs, and a buyer-side owner for evaluation or trials.

04 / NEXTThe buyer still has to win. Test the economics.

Make the value real.

Illustrative USD planning inputs only—not market averages, quotes, or promised savings. Buyer gross benefit = annual packaged-unit volume × buyer-estimated avoidable cost per unit × realized share. Replace with buyer-measured scrap, rework, or other attributable cost data; count the upfront and annual ongoing deployment costs once each in year one.

See formulas, evidence needed and research context

Gross benefit = potential units × economic unit value × realized share.

Full year-one cost = full upfront deployment + annual operating cost. Net = benefit − full cost. Year-one ROI = net ÷ full cost × 100. Each cost is subtracted once.

Simple upfront payback = upfront cost ÷ (annual benefit − annual operating cost) × 12 months, only if annual net benefit is positive. It assumes steady annual realization, not a discounted cash-flow forecast. Year-one break-even units = full year-one cost ÷ realized unit value.

Measure the buyer’s baseline and post-installation material use, rejects/rework, and attributable cost over comparable production runs; document product/SKU mix, material, line speed, changeovers, and operating conditions. Realized share is the portion of the buyer-estimated opportunity actually realized, not the probability that a project succeeds. EPA describes potential cost savings from using less packaging and avoiding disposal; PMMI discusses material-performance trade-offs and line testing. Neither establishes a savings rate for a specific buyer.
