ACCOUNT RESEARCH FOR INDUSTRIAL ADDITIVE-MANUFACTURING EQUIPMENT SELLERS

Sell the business case, not just the build plate.

Alma Hunter delivers reviewed account and buyer-fit research for industrial additive-manufacturing equipment sellers—grounded in avoidable tooling and prototyping events, utilization, and material/process suitability. No websites, subscriptions, CRM, or guaranteed leads.

The accounts. The business case. The next move.

THE PAIN / NOT ANOTHER GENERIC LIST

A printer isn't a business case

Before selling time becomes sunk time, test the obstacles.

Tooling bills keep arriving

Paid fixtures, molds, patterns, and prototypes may recur—but not every job suits additive manufacturing.

Capital waits for a workload

Without recurring candidate jobs and realistic utilization, an impressive machine can become an expensive showroom piece.

Materials come with fine print

Process, material, part requirements, and qualification needs can narrow the usable opportunity before purchase.

02 / NEXTThe obstacle becomes a research question.

WHAT ALMA HUNTER DELIVERS

Make the fit—and the math—earn its layer

  1. 01

    Trace avoidable spend

Compare documented external tooling and prototype costs with candidate jobs that pass technical and material-fit review.

  2. 02

    Test utilization assumptions

Estimate plausible annual eligible-job volume against available machine time and the buyer's actual workflow.

  3. 03

    Surface material gates early

Identify required materials, process constraints, testing, and qualification questions before a capital decision.

Metrics to monitor—not guaranteed lifts, meetings or sales.

TRACK 01

Candidate jobs documented

Learning target: count recurring tooling or prototyping events with a stated buyer workflow and evidence source.

TRACK 02

Cost assumptions verified

Learning target: record buyer-validated event spend, equipment cost, and annual operating-cost inputs.

TRACK 03

Material-fit questions resolved

Learning target: document required material/process checks and identify open qualification gates.

04 / NEXTThe buyer still has to win. Test the economics.

Make the value real.

Illustrative fictional USD inputs: $250,000 upfront, $80,000 annual ongoing cost, 50 eligible events/year, $10,000 avoidable external spend/event, and 50% realized share. Gross benefit = volume × unit value × realization share; year-one cost = upfront + annual ongoing cost, each counted once; net = benefit − cost; ROI = net ÷ cost × 100. The realized share reflects the estimated portion technically suitable, materially compatible, and operationally usable—not the probability of project success. Do not count operating costs again in event savings.

See formulas, evidence needed and research context

Gross benefit = potential units × economic unit value × realized share.

Full year-one cost = full upfront deployment + annual operating cost. Net = benefit − full cost. Year-one ROI = net ÷ full cost × 100. Each cost is subtracted once.

Simple upfront payback = upfront cost ÷ (annual benefit − annual operating cost) × 12 months, only if annual net benefit is positive. It assumes steady annual realization, not a discounted cash-flow forecast. Year-one break-even units = full year-one cost ÷ realized unit value.

Buyer-side planning estimate, not a forecast or guaranteed return. Validate candidate volume and avoidable spend against invoices, job records, and purchasing data; validate operating cost, utilization, and material/process suitability with the buyer. NIST's cost review says AM economics vary, material is a major cost factor, and published studies have scope limitations. NIST MEP's example savings are an attributed company estimate, not a general benchmark.
